Parc des Buttes-Chaumont
Officially opened in 1867, this park is very popular with Parisians, which has a lot to do with the amazing views of Paris on offer and stunning view of Sacre Coeur. Add to this the 105 ft waterfall, you can easily appreciate why this park is so popular at weekends. A great place for a stroll and a picnic and you have to visit the grotto (right).

There is a great view of Montmarte and Le Sacre Coeur sitting on top of the hill. It is one of the reasons this park is so popular with Parisians.
If you are looking for some peace and quiet, it is best to avoid the weekends when the park is very busy. During weekdays, you are sure to find some quiet spot to sit down for a nice relaxing picnic. Even at weekends it is worth a visit, just don't expect it to be so peaceful.
There are over 45 species of cultivated plants, tress and shrubs in the park. Try and find some of the following trees, many of which were planted when the park was created, including:

  • Common Alder
  • European Beech
  • European Black Pine
  • Giant Sequoia
  • Ginkgos
  • Hackberry
  • Oriental Plane
  • Ornamental Pears

Baron Haussmann transformed the original limestone and gypsum quarry in 1867 into the park you see today. One of our favourite features has to be the grotto, which includes a beautiful and artificial stalactites (below).
If you are in Paris and fancy some fresh air and a little greenery, then you should definitely try walking some of the 5 kilometres of trails and paths the Parc des Buttes Chaumont has to offer. The park closes
