There were two false starts to building Madeleine, though the pillars from the second are still in place today. Construction first started in 1763, with construction soon halted in 1764. It wasn't until 1842 that Madeleine was finally consecrated as a church, after some consideration was given to using it as a train station.

The interior of Madeleine is as stunning as the structure itself, well worth going in to visit.
Napoleon originally planned Madeleine to be a temple to the glory of the great army, though with the construction of Arc de Triomphe, this was soon defunct.
